Research - Historical Interiors

This wallpaper was produced in the mid 18th century, it has a strong form of motion within it with subtle elements of a checkerboard theme running through it, as well as having rhythm and gradiation. If there was ever an interior print which has most the themes within it, I think this is it! :P

Frank Lloyd Wright was an architect and interior designer, his stained glass designs have a geometric form which forms a checkerboard effect. You can see more of his work here.

Charles Rennie Macintosh followed the freedom of Art Nouveau, he produced furnishing with geometric shapes before introducing furnishings with exaggerated proportions.
This black chair by Macintosh allows me to visualise what a checkerboard theme would look like in something similar to this interior furnishing. You can see more of Charles Rennie Macintosh's work here.

I've recently discovered a new artist Kelly Morgan, her wallpaper designs are really influential, her style of mixing vintage inspired wallpaper with vintage illustrations but keeping it contemporary is great.

Juilette Ober has taken on an unusual contemporary approach to illustrate vintage designs for interiors. She hand paints ink drawings onto vintage coloured tiles, suitably for the kitchen.
