Emily Price

Emily Price is a designer who has a narrative involving issues in her work.
This installation titled 'American Servicemen
and Women Who Have Died in Iraq and Afghanistan (But Not Including the Wounded, Nor the Iraqis nor the Afghanis)' is being exhibitioned in The Saatchi Gallery. There are lots of connotations that could be read into the structure and colours used in this piece and that is up to the viewer to deter them.

Emily Prince is also the designer for Joanna Newsom's album cover The Milky Eyed Mender, I really like the descriptive lyrics in Joanna Newsom's music which matches the album Emily Prince designed for her as it's very narrative.

EvilPikachuMachine Joanna Newsom's voice sounds like my grandmother singing after breathing in a balloon full of helium. And I love it. - youtube

That the difference between
the sprout and the bean
is a golden ring,
it is a twisted string.
And you can ask the counsellor;
you can ask the king;
and they'll say the same thing;
and it's a funny thing:

SELF DIRECTED BRIEF

The brief I've set myself is of a collection of narratives from quotes, lyrics, films, sayings, isms, objects, letters and from them I will produce drawings that will then be taken into card designs.

I'll be using social network sites as part of this project as I think they're becoming quite popular for predicting future trend predictions as they're a base for unusual niche groups.

Paper & Cloth Module Report

The 'Live' brief with Paper & Cloth, started with quick responses to flowers with a range of medias, exploring ways to create different styles, by using creative drawings styles such as right and left hand drawing, mouth drawing, drawing with your eyes closed, 10 second drawing, this achieved a free drawing style with good line qualities.

After choosing to do stationary I did research on 6 outlets, asking customers their name, age, 3 musical they currently like, a film they have enjoyed and an event/political matter/global matter/celebrity issue that has impacted them recently. This was to get an idea of what the outlets customers were thinking. The surveys were interesting as a lot of them had the same answers despite being from different generations. Tv shows such as Dancing On Ice and Popstar to Operastar has turned Katherine Jenkins into one of the favourites for musical artists, along with Micheal Buble who performed on XFactor, these shows have a high number of viewers and clearly have an influencial effect on the public. Florance and the Machine was a favourite for 20-35 year olds, as her single had just recently reached the charts.
Avatar obviously has had a lot of reviews and hype around it so it was no surprise that most people said Avatar as their movie choice and after the the worldwide appeal for the Haiti earthquake it seemed an obvious choice for people to pick as it was at the foremost in their minds. Though some people mentioned Iraq and the current war.

I picked my colour palette from the island Haiti as a future colour palette and linked it with the theme Exotic Flowers & Animals.

Hanna Werning

Hanna Wernings motifs are much later in scale than Brie Harrison & are primarily in siluhouette form. She uses around 6-7 colours for each design and around 6-12 motifs. Some animals such as the deers and butterflies are a reoccuring theme in her work but she alters the shape of the animal with each design while in single designs the same motif can occur but in various sizes.

Lauren Moriarty Report

Laurens work took height in 2001 when she explored laser cut patterns which at the time were rare, she also explores fabric structures within her work. She gets her inspiration from interesting fabrics such as plastics, rubber, rubber foam and glow in the dark fabric, fabrics that hold an intellectual purpose that can be played with, and follows themes from there, which often express a narrative story within the design, which are played out in shapes & textures. A popular theme within her work is off illusions as she like to create and interaction between her work and the viewer, another inspiration she said she finds interest in is the illusion within magic. She sets off innovative ideas rather than following trends. She says she re-defies her work and explores new ideas with different medias to generate new designs.
Lauren Moriartys childs beside lamp table, this combines the two as well as being decorative and interesting to children. This uses glow in the dark fabric so there is no need for wires or electricity making it safe as well as decorative. The colours are calming while linking with the sea theme, the theme is also simulating for childrens imagination and educational purposes.

Lauren Moriarty butterfly lampshades, the overlay of butterflies, give the illusion the butterflies are in flight.

Jane Lackey

Jane Lackey works alot with a white on white palette and takes her inspiration from the bodys systems, looking at neoscience, genetics and patterns of speech and communcation. These result in map like structures. She works on paper, paintings and installation.

This are DNA structures, up close they have numbers embodied on to them, forming the DNA strands and coding.

I felt like these represented slides, something I've been looking into. The placement of these are interesting to, it's as if as a whole they form a cellular structure.
